SSCXWC

Damn. After I finish the Dragon Poo Tea in 2 weeks I'd have less than 3 months to make sure this kryptonite has left my body, lose 10#, and train enough to be able to withstand 45 minutes of deathly exertion on a singlespeed bike in the mud, rain, and cold of November.

Doable? Anything is doable if you're stubborn enough.

Do I have any base training to back me up? hahahahahahaaaaaaa......

Would my body forgive me? Not likely.

Do I tell Dr. Peter what I did when I have yet another relapse? Hell no.

I'm starting "cyclcross bootcamp" next week at cycle u. I'm sure I'm about to have my arse handed to me for the next 6 weeks. I've got a geared cross bike now, but am starting to collect parts for a single speed.

Have you got a recommendation on SS gearing? Most stock seem to run 42x17 or 42x20...

Sweet! I've heard good things about the CU CX bootcamp. And don't worry, everyone gets their arse handed to them no matter how good they are. The good thing about CX is that you can do it in a relatively private setting among the trees, although the crowd gets a good view of you gasping for life on the "run" up.

SS gearing is always a personal preference, esp given your bike, wheels, and conditioning. Suffice it to say that it will be much lower than what you ride on the street. The 42x20 (56") is a good place to start. I ran 55" (36x16) on my ss mtb, when I was in excellent condition, and 52" (39x20) on my ss crosscheck when I was only in good condition.

Test out your bike when it has gears and see what ratio you can live with the best. You won't need a granny gear for hills because there really aren't that many and usually you "run" up them anyway. Woodland Park is a good place to play with gear ratios.

And make sure to get your sweet mama out there to ring some cowbell for you!
