Forty white bikes were chained to lamp posts and street signs around Seattle in the wee morning hours this week to represent locations where cyclists have been struck by cars. ghostcycle.org is collecting and mapping the bike/car incident data to raise awareness of cyclists on city streets. The 40 bikes are by no means the entire collection of data, but the locations with the highest incidents. I was quite surprised not to see a pile of white bikes at some of the intersections I negotiate where I have often said "a car has my name on it." The City of Seattle, being their old passive self, has said they will not remove the bikes unless they pose a hazard to navigation or people complain about them. I give them a week.
